Areas of activity
The diverse work carried out within the framework of the School of Education FACE currently focuses in particular on the following areas of activity:
- Study, counselling, and teaching
- Practice networking
- Educational and teaching research
- Networking and promoting dialogue
Study, counselling and teaching
The School of Education FACE promotes teaching cooperation between the participating universities. By exploiting synergies, the further development of curricula and teaching in the field of teacher education is constantly being advanced. The aim is to prepare prospective teachers as well as possible for everyday working life. Teacher education in Freiburg is characterized by a focus on competence and science, creating coherence and promoting reflection processes. Teaching development also focuses on strengthening professional orientation by creating coherence at the curricular level and linking science and practice.
Through individual counseling, events, and specific offerings, prospective students and students of teacher education are supported by the School of Education FACE throughout the entire educational process—from the orientation phase before starting a degree program, through orientation internships, the bachelor’s degree program, the transition from a bachelor’s to a master’s degree program, the school practice phase, and continuing education and training for teachers in the profession.
Practice networking: school network, continuing education and training
The School of Education FACE considers the integration of theory and practice in teacher training to be an important task. At our Freiburg location, we work closely with schools, teacher training and continuing education seminars (Seminaren für Ausbildung und Fortbildung der Lehrkräfte), the Center for School Quality and Teacher Training (Zentrum für Schulqualität und Lehrerbildung), and school authorities to ensure that university studies and the subsequent preparatory service are well coordinated. We also strive to expand the ongoing further training of teachers in the spirit of lifelong learning. Practical networking takes place at the levels of practical phases, further training and research.
Within the framework of the network of university partner schools, schools work closely with the School of Education FACE in practical networking and research. Currently, eleven schools of all types (elementary schools, German secondary school types like: Werksrealschulen, Realschulen, Gymnasien, berufliche Gymnasien) are active in the network as university partner schools.
Education and teaching research
Empirical education and teaching research (organized within the KeBU competence network) takes place at the School of Education FACE in close connection with teacher training and in intensive exchange with practitioners. Researchers from the participating universities collaborate on research projects and in supervising doctoral students.
In the area of promoting young scientists, the School of Education established an interdisciplinary research group on science and evidence orientation in the teaching profession (WisE, Wissenschafts- und Evidenzorientierung im Lehrer*innenberuf) in 2024, which accepts new doctoral and postdoctoral students every three years. The goal of the research group is to investigate how the use of subject-specific, educational, and didactic findings as a basis for teaching can be systematically and sustainably promoted. Interdisciplinary projects combine research and teaching to make valuable contributions to evidence-based teaching practices.
Networking and promoting dialogue
The School of Education FACE provides information about its activities in teacher training through newsletters, specific information and events, and promotes dialogue between all stakeholders in teacher training in Freiburg and beyond.
Here you can read more about two examples in that field:
Internationalisation
Internationalisation is a cross-cutting task that affects all areas of activity and is closely interwoven with the internationalisation strategies of the cooperating universities. Measures to increase student and lecturer mobility and to internationalise the curricula in teacher training are supported.
