Cooperation between Freiburg universities in teacher education
The School of Education FACE is a collaboration between the University of Freiburg, the University of Education Freiburg, and the University of Music Freiburg in the field of teacher training. Students of teacher education benefit from the cooperation, they attend courses at both universities and benefit from the subject-specific academic expertise of the university, the subject-specific didactic expertise of the university of education, as well as the educational science expertise of both universities.
Teacher education in Freiburg
In Baden-Württemberg, the path to becoming a teacher generally involves completing a bachelor’s and master’s degree programme specific to teacher education, followed by a practical training phase for teacher education (Vorbereitungsdienst). The teacher education programme comprises (at least two) subject-specific sciences and their subject didactics, as well as educational sciences and school practice. In Freiburg, studying at the University of Freiburg and the University of Education opens up many paths to a career in teaching.
To work as a teacher at a Gymnasium (German general secondary school) later on, you can study a polyvalent dual-major bachelor’s degree program (with secondary-school teaching degree option, Gymnasiales Lehramt) and then complete a Master of Education in Secondary School Teaching (Gymnasiales Lehramt) at the University of Freiburg. With a Master of Education in Secondary School Teaching, you can also teach the general subjects you studied at vocational schools.
The subject of music for secondary school teaching is offered by the Freiburg University of Music. In this case, you will be enrolled at both the University of Freiburg and the University of Music.
The University of Education Freiburg offers teacher training courses for primary school, secondary school, higher education at vocational schools and music in elementary and primary schools, as well as specialised courses in European teaching and integrated German-French teacher training courses.
Optimal career preparation
Freiburg offers students of teacher education a highly qualified training and preparation for their future career as a teacher. During their studies, students acquire the specialist knowledge required for their teaching subjects. Research-based subject didactics teaches them how to teach their respective subjects effectively so that future students learn a lot and enjoy learning. In their educational science studies, students learn how teaching and learning work and how they can deal with the diverse challenges of their profession.
As part of their studies, they also return to school – now with the new perspective of a teacher. Teacher education students complete systematically supervised practical phases that serve as orientation and practical testing. In particular, the orientation internship that takes place at the beginning of the program is intensively prepared and followed up on at the university.
We work closely with teacher training and continuing education seminars (Seminare für die Ausbildung und Fortbildung der Lehrkräfte) and schools to ensure that university studies and the subsequent practical training phase for teacher education are well coordinated. Together, we help students of teacher education to gradually and systematically develop and expand their professional skills throughout their entire training program.
